Neutropenic + Fever = A night at the hospital
Kaylee’s morning started off normal…
Kaylee woke-up and had some breakfast while Kyle ran around the house getting ready for school. Yesterday’s visit was supposed to be a follow-up from surgery to see how Kaylee and her new Broviac were doing, and she was also to receive a blood transfusion. Kaylee’s blood levels/counts were really low, and she was really starting to look pale. Well, as I said, that was the plan… Kaylee’s body had a much different idea. Kaylee developed a temperature of 103 degrees – yikes! Luckily for us, she was already in the hospital, so we didn’t have to rush her there. The nurses/doctors immediately put her on some antibiotics, and admitted her into Rainbow Babies and Children hospital for observation. Since she’s Neutropenic and running a fever, they could not immediately give her the blood transfusion she desperately needed. Kaylee was really starting to get irritable and lost her appetite. Along with her loss of her appetite, she also lost that spunk and happy-go-lucky attitude we’re so used to. Kaylee pretty much stayed in bed all day – the nurses checked her temperature throughout the day, and monitored her condition. Her temperature dropped and rose a few times before finally leveling back out to normal later in the evening. Hopefully a good night’s rest will help her out… oh yea, I almost forgot – she did end up receiving the blood transfusion later in the evening too.
It looks like we’ll be in the hospital the rest of the week, and through the weekend now. Kaylee’s white blood-cell count pretty much bottomed out (less than 100), so now we have to let the neupogen do it’s thing and help bring Kaylee’s white blood-cell count back up. She’ll go through the harvesting of her blood sometime this weekend. I’ll keep everyone posted!
Until later, thank you all for reading Kaylee’s blog and keeping her in your thoughts and prayers. Carol, Kyle, Kaylee and I really appreciate your kind words. We love you all!
I almost forgot to mention – Kaylee’s new Broviac is working wonderfully! We were able to draw blood the first time from both tubes – yay!
